Traveling through Latin America is much easier — and much more fun — when you can speak a little Spanish. You don't need fluency. You need a handful of phrases that unlock real situations. Here are ten that cover a lot of ground.
The golden starters
1. ¿Cuánto cuesta? (How much does it cost?) — Your best friend in any market. Always ask before buying.
2. ¿Dónde está...? (Where is...?) — Fill in the blank: the bathroom (el baño), the station (la estación), the beach (la playa).
3. No entiendo, ¿puede repetir, por favor? (I don't understand, can you repeat, please?) — People are patient when you're polite. This one keeps conversations alive.
In the restaurant
4. ¿Me trae la cuenta, por favor? (Can you bring me the bill, please?) — Use it at the end of any meal.
5. La cuenta, por favor. / ¿Qué me recomienda? (The bill, please / What do you recommend?) — The second one is a great way to try local dishes you'd never have ordered on your own.
Getting around
6. ¿A qué hora sale el bus? (What time does the bus leave?) — Bus travel is everywhere in Latin America, and this is the phrase you'll need most.
7. Por favor, me deja en... (Please drop me off at...) — Perfect for taxis and rideshares. Add the address or the name of the place.
Emergencies and kindness
8. ¿Dónde hay un hospital? (Where is there a hospital?) — Hope you never need it, but know it.
9. Muchas gracias por todo. (Thank you so much for everything.) — Gratitude opens every door.
10. ¿Habla inglés? (Do you speak English?) — Honest and useful. Say it with a smile.
One tip that beats all ten
Don't just memorize the words — say them out loud before you go. Practise the melody of ¿Cuánto cuesta? until it rolls off your tongue. Locals will appreciate the effort more than the perfection, and un poquito de español goes a very long way.
