Numbers 16 to 19 and 21 to 29
16-19 join ten + unit in one word: dieciséis (16), diecisiete (17). 21-29 drop the 'e' of veinte and become one word: veintiuno (21), veinticinco (25).
Veinte (20) + uno = veintiuno. Diez (10) + seis = dieciséis.
Write 21-29 as a single word with no 'y'. From 31 on, separate the words with 'y': treinta y uno.
Tens 30 to 100
Tens from 30 to 90 are separate words joined by 'y' before a unit: treinta (30), treinta y dos (32), cuarenta y cinco (45). The word for 100 is 'cien'.
30 = treinta. 32 = treinta y dos. 100 = cien.
Memorize the ten words first: diez, veinte, treinta, cuarenta, cincuenta, sesenta, setenta, ochenta, noventa, cien.
Asking prices and giving numbers
Ask a price with '¿Cuánto cuesta...?' and answer with 'cuesta' + the number. For phone numbers, read each digit separately.
— ¿Cuánto cuesta? — Cuesta veintiuno dólares. Mi teléfono es el cinco, cinco, dos, uno.
'¿Cuánto cuesta?' works for one thing; '¿Cuánto cuestan?' for several things (cuestan + plural).
